Policy on Campus Space Assignments with Relation to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

It is a priority of the Berkeley campus that space used for key or unique functions of its primary programs (for example, classrooms, departmental offices, commonly used sports, performance, and meeting facilities, and libraries) is physically accessible to people with disabilities. Inaccessible space may remain unaltered if it is not unique and alternate suitable accessible space is provided. Inaccessible space may also remain unaltered if it is prohibitively expensive or technically infeasible to make such space accessible. However, program access must be provided.

Departments are expected to use their assigned space in a manner that achieves program access. Access requirements will be considered whenever decisions are made to reassign campus space. Reassignments made by the Space Assignments and Capital Improvements Committee should result in improved program access to the extent possible.
