Academic Program Review Changes

Changes Effective Sept. 2017

Under the leadership of Vice Provost Liu and with the approval of the Program Review Oversight Committee, the Academic Program Review (APR) team within the Division of Academic and Space Planning (ASP) has implemented changes to improve the usefulness and effectiveness of the APR process (see overview). This initiative, conducted in partnership with the deans and department chairs, is intended to ensure timely communication, facilitate strategic planning, make information more accessible, and support collaboration between administrative and academic units.

  • A new step in the APR process is a mid-cycle check-in (a short form to be completed approximately five years after the issuance of the APR outcome letter) to document progress toward addressing issues identified during the most recent review as well as to inform administrative leaders regarding new issues and/or opportunities. This will demonstrate to the Accrediting Commission for Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) that the campus has instituted a continual cycle of assessment and improvement for the university’s degree programs.

  • Beginning in Fall 2017, the APR team will send an annual reminder (in September) to the administrative faculty and staff leadership for each academic unit. This e-mail message will include a customized APR schedule for the unit, a link to the unit’s academic planning dashboard within the Cal Answers system, and a link to the online repository (Box folder) containing the unit’s APR and related documents. Notice of the mid-cycle check-in will be provided as well, one year in advance.

  • The website of the Division of Academic and Space Planning hosts a public Summary Profile for each academic unit to help raise its visibility and to facilitate multi-unit initiatives. This one-page document provides basic facts and figures, lists other units with jointly appointed faculty as well as related research centers and institutes, and allows the unit to highlight notable achievements, activities, and new initiatives. The annual reminder will include a link to the unit’s Profile, which can be updated by the unit leaders as needed.

All the materials and data mentioned above may be accessed directly from the Academic Units section on this website.
